November Digest 2023

A Note From Our President

Hi All!

I’m sure like many of you, I’ve spent the last couple of weeks digging and storing tubers. It’s definitely bittersweet to see the season end but I am ready for a bit of a break, spending time with family and friends and dreaming about the next season.

A reminder that the Photo Content entries are due today, Nov. 10. So please make sure to send Sharon any pictures that you'd like to submit. I'll send out an email about voting next week.

We’ll be getting together two more times this year, the first being November 17th at 7:00 pm at the Moreland Hills Community Center (where we hosted the bouquet workshop) where we’ll have a speaker joining us to chat about African Violets and then afterward will have time to hang out and talk about dahlias.

The second event is the Holiday Luncheon on December 9th, which will be held at the Burntwood Tavern at noon. The DSO is treating, so be sure to sign up below if you’re interested in coming. We’ll have some fun giveaways as well.

Lastly, I’d like to thank everyone for such a great year. For all of those who helped to volunteer, educate, mentor and spread the joy of dahlias—I’m very thankful for you. You help to make the DSO a great society, and my hope is that we can continue to grow and learn as a group in 2024.

Jess

Volunteers for 2024

Thanks so much to those who’ve reached out. We’ve had someone step up to take over the new members, Veronica Seman as well as Tracy Gardner will help plan events for the club.

Introducing New Members

Name: Janice Camino

City/Town:Hudson

Tell us a little about yourself: I am a full time mom to 4 amazing, young boys and devoted to helping my community by also being a full time primary care doctor. My passion for gardening started in high school being fascinated with orchids that blossomed into caring for hundreds of roses and now dabbling in the world of dahlias.

Number of years growing dahlias: Two years.

How did you get into the world of dahlias?  I'm a California girl trying to fit in to the Ohio world, trying to bring sunshine wherever I go. I love growing flowers and sharing it with anyone and everyone and I find that dahlias are so easy to care for and can grow en masse to support my cut garden hobby.

What is your favorite dahlia to grow? Any ball and dinner plate dahlias.

Name: Madeline Evan

City/Town: Youngstown, Ohio

Tell us a little about yourself: Currently, I am a first year medical student at Northeast Ohio Medical University. Unfortunately I don't have the capacity or resources to grow dahlias at school. However, I am able to grow my dahlias at my parents house. My parents help with upkeep and send pictures of the new blooms. In my free time I love spending times with my puppies, Max and Ellie. Besides growing dahlias, I enjoy reading fiction, baking, and cooking. I especially love to try new recipes that are challenging! My favorite thing about growing dahlias is how much they have to offer. They allow for the ultimate experience of joy and offering it to others whether it be through a tuber or a bloom!

Number of years growing dahlias: Two years.

How did you get into the world of dahlias?  I owe my interest in dahlias to my sister Alyssa. She has always served as a role model for me whether it be sports, school, or gardening. She lives in North Carolina and took me to the 1st Annual Central Carolina Dahlia Society Tuber Sale. I never heard of dahlias before then, but seeing how passionate my sister was about them was infectious.

What is your favorite dahlia to grow? I have never been a "favorites" person, however I do enjoy the pompon and dinner plate varieties.
