The Dahlia Society of Ohio is a participating society of the American Dahlia Society (ADS)

We encourage you to visit the ADS website (see link below) to learn more about growing dahlias but we have some quick links for you below to get you started.

Planting Dahlias

Your tubers can go directly into the ground in the spring when the ground has warmed and there is little chance of frost.

One good guideline for Ohio is to plant when the lilacs start to bloom.

If you want blooms as early as possible, you can start the tubers indoors in good light about a month before planting time. You will then have a small plant ready at planting time.

To learn more, become a member of the Dahlia Society of Ohio and tap into some of the great knowledge our growers have. You can also visit the American Dahlia Society website.

Growing Dahlias

We often cover how to grow dahlias in our monthly member meetings. If you have questions, that’s a great place to receive expert assistance.

The other place you can find resources is on the American Dahlia Society website.

Dahlia Virus and Research

Our ability to detect and control viruses in our dahlia gardens has improved dramatically over the last 20 years.

Washington State University (WSU) has been at the heart of the research work that has made that progress possible.

The American Dahlia Society has also been an integral part of the work at WSU throughout that period.

Some very basic tips for controlling virus in your garden include:

  • Sanitize your tools between cutting blooms on different plants

  • If a dahlia looks like it might have a virus, discard the plant (don’t compost).
