A Note From Our President

Hi All!

Hopefully all of your dahlias have bloomed for you by this point in the summer. If you didn’t know, the DSO has an annual photography contest, so make sure you are capturing your blooms so you can participate in the contest. I personally feel like the lighting in the fall is some of the best to really show off your dahlias in photography.

There are a couple of DSO shows coming up this month and next (see below) which I hope you’ll be able to attend and exhibit at. We’ve added some new artistic design options for the Petitti’s show which you can find on the show schedule here on the website if you’re interested in doing arrangements.

If you’re wondering how to dig and store your tubers at the end of the year, we will have some in person demos of how to dig and separate your tubers in October. See details below.

Lastly, our regular meeting time will pick up in November that I hope will be in person (details to come) and then our holiday luncheon in December which you can RSVP to further down in this email.

Bouquet Making Workshop

We had a great time getting together to make bouquets in August. Around 30 members showed up to participate and Tracy Gardner did a great job of leading us through how to make a bouquet with our dahlias.

We talked through types of fillers/greens that you can use with your bouquets and the mechanics needed to help make arrangements.

If you’d like to see a gallery of images from the day you can view them on the DSO website.

Tuber Digging/Separating Workshop

Ron Miner leading the tuber digging workshop

Unsure how to dig and store your tubers? We can help! Ron Miner and Jess Becker will be offering a weekend of learning how to take care of your tubers at the end of the season.

We’ll be meeting at Ron’s house in Chagrin Falls on October 21st at 10:00 am and Jessica’s in Cleveland Heights on October 22nd at 1:00 pm.

Please be sure to wear appropriate footwear and clothing.

If you have questions, please email president@dahliasocietyofohio.org.

Show Season

We are over halfway through the show season and there are two more shows left this year that we’d love to see you at!

  • Summit Mall | September 16-17

  • Petitti’s | Sept. 30 - Oct. 1

You can find all of the details on the DSO website and if you’d like to clerk/judge please make sure to reach out so we can add you to the list.

If you have any questions about the upcoming shows, please reach out to Jerry Moreno at moreno@jcu.edu.

Holiday Luncheon

We know it’s early but we’d like to get an idea of a head count so we can make a reservation at a local restaurant.

We’re going to have the luncheon on December 9th at 12:00 - location to be announced.

Questions, please email Elizabeth at secretary@dahliasocietyofohio.org.

Volunteers for 2024

The DSO is looking for volunteers for 2024 to help with the New Member promotion as well as looking for someone to help plan events/find speakers for the year.

If you’re interested in helping, please email Jess at president@dahliasocietyofohio.org.

Introducing New Members!

Name: Dina Cirino

City/Town: Chagrin Falls

Tell us a little about yourself:
I am a full-time pediatric otolaryngology (aka ears, nose, and throat) nurse practitioner. I have worked at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital for 19 years! I have two daughters, Camilla (9 years old) and Penelope (7 years old), and a very Italian husband named Jason. I love being outdoors, hiking, kayaking, and swimming! My favorite food is pizza and pasta! I named my business Fiorella Flowers because it is a floral-inspired girl's name with Italian roots, meaning "little flower." I started growing flowers because I wanted to show my two girls that it’s never too late to follow your passion and have a job that actually makes you happy!

Number of years growing dahlias:
 Three years.

How did you get into the world of dahlias?
My dad and grandfather were big time vegetable growers. When my husband and I settled down I started growing vegetables and I threw in dahlias because I had heard they were beautiful. Needless to say I was hooked!

What is your favorite dahlia to grow?
I still don’t know all the kinds out there, but this year Day Dreamer and Cafe Au Lait have been my favorite.
