ADS National Show - Think Reston!

The ADS National Show is in Reston, Virginia, this year. Those of you who attended our DSO-sponsored National Show in Wooster last year know that the show is a big deal! Tons of wonderful blooms. Lots of nice, enthused dahlia growers. Lots of capable judges. Interesting events and discussions. I think that the seminar discussions scheduled for Saturday afternoon in Reston promise to be one of the most exciting attractions.

There will be presentations on both key ADS research projects, Virus and the Dahlia Genome. Professor Pappu and Dr. Prabu Gnanasekaran will speak on the status of their research work on virus at WSU. Professor Alex Harkess will speak on the genome project underway at Auburn University and the Ph.D. thesis work of Zach Meharg. He and his colleagues collected leaf samples at our National Show in Wooster. Bob Schroeder, Chair of the ADS Judging Committee, will speak on the recent and ongoing update of our process of judging dahlias and training judges. In addition, there will be a presentation on photographing dahlias from a widely published photographer and on integrated pest management by a national expert on that topic.

The national shows represent the only real opportunity we have to cover so much important and exciting material in a presentation format. I encourage you to take advantage of the opportunity to participate! All the show details and registration information are available from a link on the front page of our ADS website, dahlia.org.

Tell us a little about yourself: My husband Steve and I have 2 children that are now out of the home. They have blessed us with 3 grandchildren that live close to us. We love spending time with them. For 19 years I have been an insurance agent risk advisor. I love helping people with their personal insurance need. In my spare time I enjoy working in my flower gardens. I have perennials and annuals. Last year I planted some dahlia tubers but didn't know what I was doing which turned out to be a failure. I went to the dahlia show at the ATI and learned what I was doing wrong. Last winter I read books on how to care for dahlias to be successful. This year I planted 70 tubers and with the guidance of the Dahlia Society of Ohio, I have beautiful flowers with long sturdy stems. I would say I am hooked!

Number of years growing dahlias: This is my 2nd year to grow dahlias

How did you get into the world of dahlias? I went to the dahlia show at ATI (Agricultural Technical Institute) last year.

Tell us a little about yourself: I have been a court reporter since 1984. I presently am employed with the Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court. We handle all felonies as well as civil cases in our court. We moved to Ohio in 2001 from Charleston, SC. I used to be an avid equestrian, even dipped my toe into horse breeding. I have always gardened. I began flower growing about two years ago. Dahlias are my first love. Dahlias amaze me at how diverse the flower is. Such incredible, beautiful varieties. When not in the garden or working, I spend time with my wife, Pat, and children, Holly and Bradley, 22 and 23.

Number of years growing dahlias: Two years. I only grew about 30 dahlias last year . This year I lost count at 300.

How did you get into the world of dahlias? Buying a tuber from a big box store was my first introduction to dahlias. I've been hooked since then.

What is your favorite dahlia to grow? My favorite type of dahlia to grow is the water lily varieties. To me, they're very romantic! My wife loves them.
